Jaipur to Shimla Distance by Road: Route, Travel Time & Complete Guide

Most people plan Shimla trips from Delhi. Jaipur travellers often get left out of the conversation, which is a shame - because the Jaipur to Shimla distance by road is actually a very driveable stretch and the route itself passes through some genuinely interesting terrain. You go from the flat Rajasthani plains, through the agricultural belt of Haryana, into the Shivalik foothills and then up into the Himalayas. It is three different landscapes in a single drive.

If you are planning this trip - by road, bus, train or flight - this guide has everything you need to plan it properly.

About Shimla

Shimla is Himachal Pradesh's capital, built across a ridge at around 2,200 metres above sea level. The British made it their summer capital during the colonial period and that history is still visible in the architecture - Gothic churches, half-timbered buildings and a ridge-top promenade that has barely changed in a hundred years.

The Mall Road and The Ridge are the social centre of the town. Above that is Jakhu Hill with its temple and monkey population. Below the main town, the hillsides drop steeply into forested valleys.

What makes Shimla different from many Indian hill towns is that a large part of it is actually walkable. The Mall Road is vehicle-free, the Ridge is open and wide and the older parts of town have a density and character that rewards slow exploration on foot.

Temperature-wise, winters get cold enough for snow (December to February), summers stay pleasant at 15–25°C and monsoon brings heavy rainfall and occasional landslides on the approach roads.

Jaipur to Shimla Road Distance and Best Route Options

Blog Image 1

The distance between Jaipur to shimla comes to roughly 590 to 620 km depending on which roads you take through Haryana and how you enter the hills. Two routes are worth considering.

Route 1: Via NH-48, Delhi Bypass and Chandigarh (Most Practical)

Jaipur → Rewari → Gurugram → Delhi Bypass (NH-48/NH-44) → Ambala → Chandigarh → Kalka → Shimla

This is the route most drivers from Jaipur use. You head northeast from Jaipur on NH-48, pass through Rewari and either cut through Gurugram or take the Delhi peripheral bypass to avoid the city entirely. From there, NH-44 runs north through Ambala to Chandigarh. After Chandigarh, the route follows the standard Kalka–Shimla mountain road.

Total distance: approximately 600 km.
The Delhi peripheral expressway (KMP - Kundli-Manesar-Palwal) is useful here. It lets you bypass Delhi without entering the city, which saves a significant amount of time depending on the hour.

Route 2: Via Kotputli and Ambala (Direct Option)

Jaipur → Kotputli → Ambala → Chandigarh → Kalka → Shimla
This route follows a direct northeast path from Jaipur via Kotputli and continues towards Ambala using the expressway network. The roads are generally smooth, allowing for a steady and comfortable drive with minimal interruptions. It is a practical option for those starting early and looking for a straightforward route. The total distance is around 580–590 km, and travel time depends on traffic and breaks along the way.p>

Travel Time from Jaipur to Shimla by Road

Realistic total driving time for the distance between Jaipur to shimla is 10 to 12 hours, broken down roughly like this:

  • Jaipur to Chandigarh: 6 to 7 hours (470 km, highway with bypasses)
  • Chandigarh to Kalka: 45 minutes (30 km)
  • Kalka to Shimla: 2.5 to 3 hours (90 km, mountain road)

An early start from Jaipur - by 4 AM or 5 AM - gets you to Chandigarh by late morning, through Kalka by noon and into Shimla by mid-afternoon. That gives you time to settle in and still catch the evening light on The Ridge.

If you leave later, account for Gurugram and Delhi peripheral traffic, which can be slow between 8 AM and 11 AM. The Ambala to Chandigarh stretch on the expressway is usually fast regardless of time.

Best Time to Travel and Practical Tips

March to June is the most visited period: The drive is clear, the roads are open and Shimla's temperatures are comfortable. Expect higher accommodation prices and more traffic on the Kalka–Shimla road, especially on weekends.

September to November is the better choice for people who want fewer crowds: The monsoon ends in September, the hills are green and clear and hotel rates are more reasonable. October is particularly good - clear skies, cool air and the apple harvest in the valleys below Shimla.

December to February brings snow: The Kalka–Shimla road stays mostly open, but ice on bends is possible and the drive slows down. If you want snow, this is when to go. Pack properly for sub-zero nights.

July to August requires caution: The Kalka–Shimla road is prone to landslides during heavy monsoon rain. Check the HP road condition updates before leaving and avoid driving this stretch at night.

Before you leave - things to sort:

  • Use the KMP Expressway to skip Delhi if leaving between 7 AM and 10 AM. It adds a few kilometres but saves real time.
  • Fill the tank at Chandigarh. Post-Kalka, fuel stations are available but not as frequent.
  • Keep toll change or a FASTag active - there are multiple toll plazas between Jaipur and Chandigarh.
  • Download an offline map covering the Kalka–Shimla section. Signal is unreliable on the mountain bends.
  • Pack a light jacket even for a summer trip. Shimla evenings drop to single digits in shoulder seasons.
  • Book accommodation in advance for May–June weekends. Shimla fills up fast during peak season.

Exciting Locations for a Road Trip from Jaipur to Shimla

The Jaipur to Shimla road trip is not just about the destination. Several stops along the route are genuinely worth the time.

Kotputli – If you take this route, Kotputli becomes a convenient stop along the way. While it’s more of a transit town, you’ll find plenty of highway restaurants, fuel stations, and quick refreshment stops here. It’s a good place to take a short break, especially if you’re driving early in the day. The stretch around Kotputli is part of a well-developed highway corridor, making the drive relatively smooth and hassle-free compared to interior roads.

Ambala - A natural halfway stop between Jaipur and Chandigarh. The city is known for its scientific instruments market and has good breakfast options for an early morning stop. If you left Jaipur at 4 AM, you will likely hit Ambala around 8 AM - a good time to eat properly before the highway narrows.

Chandigarh - If time allows for more than a fuel stop, the Rock Garden is the single best thing to see here. Nek Chand's sculpture park covers 40 acres and is built entirely from industrial and construction waste. It is free to enter and takes about an hour. The Capitol Complex - designed by Le Corbusier and a UNESCO World Heritage Site - is worth seeing from the outside even if you do not go in.

Pinjore - 20 km before Kalka, the Pinjore Gardens (Yadavindra Gardens) are Mughal-style terraced gardens built in the 17th century. Good for a leg stretch. Entry is low cost and the gardens are maintained well.

Kalka - The point where the plains end and the mountains begin. The Kalka–Shimla toy train departs from here if you want to switch modes. The town itself has a few decent dhabas for a meal before the mountain section.

Solan - About halfway up the Kalka–Shimla road, Solan is known for its mushroom cultivation and houses Asia's oldest operational brewery, established in 1855. The drive through town passes through a short tunnel and some of the more wooded sections of the climb.

Alternate Travel Options to Shimla from Jaipur

By Train

There is no direct train between Jaipur and Shimla. For the Jaipur to Shimla distance by train, the standard approach involves two legs:

First, take a train from Jaipur to Delhi (around 4 to 5 hours on an express) or directly to Chandigarh or Kalka. Several trains connect Jaipur to Delhi daily - the Pink City Express and Ajmer Shatabdi are common options. From Delhi, trains to Kalka include the overnight Kalka Mail, which arrives early morning and connects with the toy train.

Alternatively, take a Jaipur–Chandigarh train directly (when available) and arrange a cab from Chandigarh to Shimla for the final 110 km stretch.

By Bus

For the Jaipur to Shimla distance by bus, Rajasthan Roadways and HRTC both operate services, though most require a change at Delhi or Chandigarh. Private bus operators run overnight services from Jaipur to Shimla - typically Volvo AC coaches that cover the distance in 12 to 14 hours. The Shimla to Jaipur distance by bus on the return is the same route in reverse, with similar frequency and options.

Direct overnight buses are available and work well for solo budget travellers who want to skip driving entirely. Book through RSRTC, HRTC portals or third-party platforms.

By Air

No direct flights operate between Jaipur and Shimla on a regular basis. For the distance by air, the practical option is flying Jaipur to Chandigarh (around 1 hour) and then driving or taking a cab to Shimla (110 km, approximately 2.5 hours). Alternatively, fly Jaipur to Delhi and continue by road or train.

Shimla's Jubbarhatti Airport is small, handles limited traffic and is heavily weather-dependent - not a reliable entry point for most travellers.

By Cab

The journey from Jaipur to Shimla by cab is the most flexible option for families and small groups. A dedicated cab covers the full ~600 km door-to-door with no changes or fixed schedules, allowing you to stop whenever you want. For 4 to 6 people travelling together, it often works out more cost-effective than combining train tickets with a separate cab from Chandigarh, while also being far more convenient.

For larger groups or extended families of around 10–12 people, opting for vehicles like a Tempo Traveller or Force Urbania is a great choice. These options provide ample seating, luggage space, and a more comfortable group travel experience, making the long journey smoother and more enjoyable.

Best Places to Visit in Shimla

The Ridge and Mall Road - The centre of Shimla's social life. The Ridge is a wide open promenade with views across the ranges. Mall Road runs alongside it with shops, old buildings and cafes. The area is pedestrian-only, which makes it far more pleasant to walk than most Indian hill towns. Go in the evening when the light on the hills changes quickly.

Jakhu Temple - A 45-minute uphill walk from The Ridge leads to this Hanuman temple at 2,455 metres. The forest on the way up is deodar and oak. The views from the top cover the Shimla ridge and the valley below. Keep food and glasses secured - the resident monkey population is confident.

Kufri - 16 km from Shimla, Kufri sits higher and gets more snow in winter. In summer, the meadows above Kufri are good for walking. Horse rides are available for those who want them. Not overly commercialised by Shimla standards.

Chail - 45 km from Shimla via a winding road through Kufri, Chail has the world's highest cricket pitch (debated, but impressive regardless). The Chail Palace is now a heritage hotel with good views. The drive from Shimla is part of the experience - through dense pine and cedar forest.

Naldehra - 23 km from Shimla, this is a deodar cedar forest with a century-old golf course. Quiet, relatively uncrowded and good for a half-day away from Shimla's main areas. The drive through the forest road is one of the nicer short drives around the town.

Viceregal Lodge - Now the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, this Victorian building was the summer residence of the British Viceroy of India. Guided tours run on most days. The building and its grounds are worth an hour, both for the architecture and for the views across the valley from the lawn.

Chadwick Falls - 7 km from Shimla, best visited between July and September when water volume is high. A short forest walk leads to the falls. Quiet during weekdays.

Shimla State Museum - Housed in a colonial building, this museum has a solid collection of Pahari miniature paintings, sculptures and historical photographs of old Shimla. Understated and worth 45 minutes.

The Jaipur to Shimla to Manali distance totals approximately 860 to 880 km - Jaipur to Shimla (600 km) plus Shimla to Manali (260 km via Rampur and the Kullu Valley). The Shimla–Manali road follows the Sutlej river before climbing into the Kullu Valley via Rampur and Mandi. The drive takes around 8 to 9 hours and passes through some of the more remote sections of Himachal Pradesh. A good two-centre trip if you have 7 to 8 days.

Kasauli - 70 km from Shimla back towards the plains, Kasauli is a small cantonment town with colonial bungalows, quiet forest walks and very little of the commercial noise that Shimla can have in season. Easy to combine with a Shimla trip as either a first-night stop on the drive up or a detour on the way back.

Sarahan - 180 km from Shimla via Rampur, Sarahan is home to the Bhimakali Temple and sits below the Kinnaur Kailash range. The views from here are considerably more dramatic than anything around Shimla town. A two-day detour if you have the time.

Why Book a Car Rental from Raj Travels?

A trip from Jaipur to Shimla involves multiple road types in a single journey - Rajasthan highways, the Delhi bypass, the NH-44 expressway and then 90 km of mountain road from Kalka. Each section demands something different from the vehicle and driver. Flat highway driving from Jaipur to Chandigarh is straightforward, but the Kalka–Shimla stretch is narrow, winding and unforgiving of poor tyres or an inexperienced driver.

Right Vehicle for Every Section

Raj Travels provides sedans, SUVs and Urbania vehicles - each suited to different group sizes and road conditions. The SUV options handle the mountain section from Kalka onwards comfortably and have the clearance needed if you plan to continue beyond Shimla to Kufri or Chail. For groups of 9 or more, the Urbania is practical - more luggage space, better passenger comfort on the 10-hour drive and lower per-person cost than booking multiple cabs.

Drivers Who Have Done This Route

The difference between a driver who knows the Kalka–Shimla road and one who does not becomes apparent quickly on the hairpin bends. Raj Travels assigns drivers familiar with hill routes - people who know the pacing required on mountain bends, where the road narrows unexpectedly and how conditions change after rain.

Fixed Pricing, No Add-Ons

Long-distance routes are where hidden charges tend to appear - tolls added separately, night charges not mentioned upfront, fuel costs passed on mid-journey. Raj Travels quotes a fixed price before the trip starts. What is agreed before departure is what gets charged on arrival.

Pickup from Jaipur, Drop in Shimla

Door-to-door service from anywhere in Jaipur to your hotel in Shimla. No need to coordinate between a cab to the bus stand, an overnight bus and then another cab from Shimla bus stand to the hotel. One booking covers the full route.

Round-the-Clock Support

A 600 km trip through multiple states has more variables than a short city transfer. Road diversions, weather delays, vehicle issues - Raj Travels has 24/7 customer support so you have a direct line if anything changes between Jaipur and Shimla.

Final Thoughts

The Jaipur to Shimla distance of 590 to 620 km is longer than the Delhi equivalent, but it is a cleaner drive in some ways - you clear Rajasthan's flat roads quickly, the Haryana highway is fast and by the time you hit Chandigarh you are ready for the mountain section. The Kalka–Shimla stretch always takes longer than people expect, but it is worth it.

Plan your departure time around the Delhi bypass to avoid losing hours in city traffic. Give Shimla at least two full days - one to recover from the drive and settle in, one to actually see the place. And if you have the time and inclination, the Shimla–Manali extension is one of the better back-to-back hill station combinations in North India.
